Tutorial – Installing Windows 95 Using Oracle VirtualBox

Update: February 2022 – It’s been a few years since I wrote this tutorial and I understand things have probably moved on a bit with VirtualBox and the available drivers etc. but I still think this tutorial mostly holds up.

Personally I’ve not had need of a Windows 95 VM for a while as I’m focusing on DOS gaming. However I can see people have been contibuting some useful comments below in my absense which might help out if you’re getting stuck. Likewise, if you find anything else please comment as I’m sure anyone reading will appreciate further insights that have otherwise been missed.

While Windows 95 can be installed using the popular MS-DOS emulator DOSBox, Oracle’s VirtualBox offers an alternative, and for later versions (such as Windows 98) is essential.

In order to follow this tutorial the following is required:

• A fully installed version of Oracle VirtualBox. This tutorial uses VirtualBox Version 5.2.6 (for Windows hosts) with the VirtualBox 5.2.6 Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack installed (both can be downloaded from here).
• A copy of Windows 95 (and it’s Licence Key). This can either be an original CD or an ISO image. This tutorial uses an ISO image of Windows 95 OSR 2.1.
• A Windows 95 boot disk image (a diskette image can be downloaded from here).
• SciTech Display Doctor Version 7 Beta Driver (an ISO image can be downloaded from here)

To begin start VirtualBox and click the New icon.

• Enter a name
• Select the type Microsoft Windows
• Select the version Windows 95
• Click Next
• Select a memory size of 64MB
• Click Next
• Choose Create a virtual hard disk now
• Click Create
• Choose VDI (VirtualBox Disk Image)
• Click Next
• Choose Dynamically allocated
• Click Next
• Use the slider to select the size of the virtual drive

It’s worth noting at this point that if the original version of Windows 95 is to be installed then the drive size should be kept to a maximum of 2GB. OSR 2 and later releases support the FAT32 file system and so larger sizes can be selected. For the purpose of this tutorial a size of 5GB was selected.

• Click Create

The VM is now created and is in a powered off state.

With the powered off VM selected click the Settings icon.

• System > Acceleration tab – ensure that Enable VT-x/AMD-v and Enable Nested Paging are both Unchecked
• Display > Screen tab – Video Memory: 32MB
• Network > Adapter 1 tab – Attached to: select NAT from the drop down menu. Expanded the Advanced menu below and ensure the Adapter Type is PCnet-PCI II (Am79C970A)
• Click OK

With the VM selected click the Start icon.

The VM will now power up and ask for the location of a start-up disk. This will be either a Windows 95 CD in a Host Drive or an ISO image . In the case of the latter navigate to the relevant ISO file by clicking on the folder icon to the right and mount the ISO image.

• Click Start

The following error occurs. This is because the Windows 95 CD is not bootable.

In order to boot the machine a boot disk is required. To mount the boot disk image select from the VirtualBox top menu:

• Devices > Floppy Drives > Choose Disk Image… Navigate to, and select, the Windows 95 boot disk image
• Machine > Reset
• Click Reset

The machine now resets and boots with the following message.

It should also detail the drive letter allocated to the CDROM Drive (if using a boot disk from the link at the beginning of this tutorial).

If the drive letter needs to be changed (for example, from R: to D:) then this can be done by editing the autoexec.bat file of the boot disk.

Optional – At the A: prompt:

• Type edit autoexec.bat and press Enter
• Change:

• Press Alt , then F , then S
• Press Alt , then F , then X

From the VirtualBox top menu:

• Machine > Reset
• Click Reset

For the purpose of this tutorial the CDROM Drive is drive D:

At the A: prompt:

• Type fdisk and press E nter

If a hard disk size larger than 512MB had been selected then a message will appear regarding large disk support and enabling the FAT32 file system.

• Select Y and press Enter
• Select 1. Create DOS partition or Logical DOS Drive and press Enter
• Select 1. Create Primary DOS Partition and press Enter
• Select Y and press Enter

A message will now appear.

From the top menu:

• Machine > Reset
• Click Reset

At the A: prompt:

• Type format c: and press Enter
• Type Y and press Enter
• Add a volume name if required and press Enter

The hard drive is now ready for Windows 95 to be installed. However before beginning the installation it is necessary to copy the start-up files from the Windows CD to the hard drive. This is because later on during the install Windows 95 restarts without CDROM support and is unable to copy certain files from the Windows CD.

At the A: prompt:

• Type C: and press Enter
• Type md temp95 and press Enter
• Type copy d:\win95\*.* c:\temp95 and press Enter

The contents of the win95 directory from the Windows 95 CD have now been copied to the temp95 directory on the hard drive. Installation of Windows 95 can now begin.

At the C: prompt:

• Type D: and press Enter
• Type Setup and press Enter
• Press Enter

Scandisk will now run and check the newly formatted hard drive. Once complete the setup will begin.

• Click Continue

At this point VirtualBox will reveal an information box that describes how the mouse cursor will be captured from the Host Machine to the Virtual Machine and how to return back to the Host Machine (by default, pressing Right Ctrl ).

Read the message and then dismiss it by clicking Capture . The mouse cursor now appears inside the Virtual Machine. (This tutorial will ignore any further transitions between Host and Virtual Machine).

• Click Continue
• Click Yes
• Click Next
• Choose the Windows 95 install directory.
• Click Next
• Choose a Setup Type (for the purpose of this tutorial Typical was used)
• Click Next
• Enter the Licence Key Number
• Click Next
• Enter a Name and if required a Company
• Click Next
• Select the Network Adapter and Sound, MIDI, or Video Capture Card tick boxes
• Click Next

Setup will now analyse the computer. Once complete:

• Choose Install the most common components (recommended)
• Click Next
• Choose No, I do not want a startup disk
• Click Next
• Click Next

Windows will now start copying files. Upon completion it will prompt regarding restarting the computer. Click Finish . A warning appears that a floppy disk is still present in the drive.

Uncapture the mouse from the Virtual Machine and navigate to the VirtualBox menu bar to dismount the boot disk image.

• Devices > Floppy Drives > Remove Disk From Virtual Drive

Return to the Virtual Machine. Click OK .

A message appears that Windows 95 is starting for the first time, followed by the setting up of the hardware.

• Click OK
• Enter a Computer Name , Workgroup and a Computer Description
• Click Close

The following error occurs:

This is because Windows cannot access files on the CD that it needs to finish the install. Fortunately these files have been copied to the hard drive (in C:\temp95).

• Click OK
• In the drop down menu type C:\temp95
• Click OK

Windows will continue installing until the point where it requires further user configuration.

• Select a time zone from the drop down menu
• Click Close
• Press Cancel (for the purpose of this tutorial a printer will not be installed)
• Click OK to restart the computer

After the computer restarts it will prompt for a username and if required a password. Enter these and press OK . Confirm the password (if created) and press OK .

Welcome to Windows 95.

The C:\temp95 directory can now be removed.

• Double click My Computer , followed by (C:)
• Right click the temp95 folder
• Select Delete
• Click Yes

Any personalisations within Windows can now be made, such as task-bar and start menu settings, folder options and the removal of any unwanted programs. It is then advisable to take a snapshot of the machine using the VirtualBox menu.

• Machine > Take Snapshot

At this point the display is limited to 640 x 480 VGA, so the next step is to update the video drivers with the SciTech Display Doctor Version 7 Beta Driver.

Optional – It’s worth noting that some of the restarts during this installation may cause the computer to hang. If this happens simply force a reset by using Machine > Reset on the VirtualBox menu.

Start by mounting the SciTech Display Doctor ISO image using the VirtualBox menu.

• Devices > Optical Drives > Remove Disk From Virtual Drive (Force Unmount if necessary)
• Devices > Optical Drives > Choose Disk Image… Navigate to, and select, the SciTech Display Doctor ISO image

Return to Windows and navigate to the SciTech Display Doctor installer using the Windows icons.

• Double click My Computer , followed by Sdd7 (D:)
• Double lick the scitech-displ icon to begin the installation

• Click Next
• Click Next
• Check the tick box and click Next
• Select the Express Installation and click Next
• Click Start Install
• Select Restart Computer Now and click Finish

Once the computer restarts the following message appears.

• Click OK and wait for the SciTech Display Doctor to load
• From the left menu select Properties
• Click on the Monitor not selected! hyperlink (under Monitors)
• Choose a Super VGA resolution.
• Click Apply
• From the left menu select Properties
• Click on the Standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA) hyperlink
• Click on the Standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA) hyperlink (under Windows Driver)
• Choose the SciTech Nucleus Driver
• Click Apply
• Click Yes to restart the computer

After the restart click OK to remove the warning and minimise the SciTech Display Doctor.

• Click the Windows Start button (in the bottom left corner of the screen)
• Navigate to Settings > Control Panel
• Double click Display
• Select the Settings tab
• Use the Desktop area slider to select a new resolution
• Click OK
• Click Yes to restart the computer

The computer should now restart in the chosen resolution. The next step is to register the SciTech Display Doctor before the 21 day trial period expires.

• Double click My Computer, followed by Sdd7 (D:)
• Double click Serial Key to display the name and serial
• Go to the SciTech Display Doctor (it should have automatically opened after the last reboot)
• From the left menu select Home
• Click the Unregistered hyperlink
• Enter the Name (CRCSCKnight) and Registration Number (0B5E-12B4-A8A4-0B)
• Click Register
• Click Exit

After registering the SciTech Display Doctor a change needs to be made to the registry in order to prevent the application opening each time the computer starts.

VirtualBox and Windows 95

In a previous post, I provided an overview of my experience with installing Windows 95 in a VM. I decided to provide further detail in this post not so much to focus on Windows 95, but as a prelude to investigating how well different virtualisation software handled legacy operating systems.

The guest OS I used in these evaluations was Windows 95 OSR2 (also referred to as Windows 95B). I avoided Windows 95 OSR1 (Windows 95A), as FAT32 only first appeared in OSR2. I also didn’t bother with Windows 95 OSR2.5 (Windows 95C) as it bundled IE4. I decided to skip this complication as it’s possible to install IE5.5, the last version of IE that Windows 95 supported.

Under the microscope in this post is VirtualBox version 5.1.22 from Oracle, the latest version available at the time of writing this post. In a future post, I’ll cover VMware Workstation Player. Time permitting, I may even decide to look at Virtual PC from Microsoft, and possibly even DOSBox.

Out-of-scope for this series of evaluations are network operations covering file and print services, and Windows Update. In-scope will be graphics and sound capability and elementary network functionality and internet access i.e. ‘Can I see stuff, even if I can’t readily access it?’

Installation

What makes Windows 95 installations different to that of later Windows OSs is that the installation CD (or ISO) is not bootable. A boot floppy (or image) is also required. VirtualBox handles both optical and floppy devices well. The only curiosity for me, was that VirtualBox assigned the letter R: to the optical drive. The floppy was A: and the target drive for the system was C: as expected.

A mouse click within the VM windows was used to make the guest OS active. Once the guest OS was active, the Right-Ctrl key was used to make the host OS active. Switching between host and guest systems took a little bit of getting use to.

I allow Windows 95 to detect hardware during installation. I also install the IP protocol at this stage. When first booting Windows 95 after initial setup, I’m confronted with the first hurdle to overcome:

The solution required Enable VT-x/AMD-V to be unchecked as suggested in this post.

Edit (16/12/2019): This breaks under VirtualBox V6.1. Windows 95 is no longer a supported OS. Curiously, though not supported, WFW 3.11 still works under VirtualBox 6.x. A Windows 95 VM still runs on VirtualBox 5.x.

As I found out later, the issue stems from a ‘divide by zero’ problem as a result of using a modern-day processor for the host system. Refer to this Microsoft article for an explanation.

Initial Impressions

After finalising setup and booting into Windows, the first thing that I noticed was sound. I also noticed that I have network visibility. However, I noticed that Windows 95 only runs in 640 x 480 resolution and 16 colours.

Attempting to install VirtuaBox Guest Additions throws up the following dialoge box:

This VirtualBox tutorial states that ‘Windows 9x is not officially supported by VirtualBox team, which means, that it lacks Guest VM Additions, and it runs slowly, because VirtualBox is not optimized to run Win 9x.’

The view of Device Manager below provides additional clues to what we’re observing. Note that the display is standard VGA and there are some unknown devices. At this stage, also note that the VM network adapter has been identified as an AMD PCNET Family Ethernet Adapter (PCI&ISA).

Display

The tutorial also sheds light on display limitations within VirtualBox for Windows 95 and recommends the use of a SciTech Display Doctor driver to address the limitations.

Internet Explorer (IE)

IE3 is bundled with Windows 95 OSR2. Being non-standard and out-of-date, it complained when attempting to display web pages. As you can see from the image below, web pages look pretty grim on IE3.

IE5.5 SP2 is the highest version of IE that is compatible with Windows 95. While there are still some problems, Web pages look a lot better under IE5.5.

A Tools menu item and Windows Update (WU) has been added to the IE5.5 menu. This did not exist in IE3.

Installing IE5.5 required me to create an ISO image to deliver it via the optical device.

Windows Update

Sadly, I haven’t been able to get WU working in Windows 95. A search on the internet suggests that numerous updates are available. However, there isn’t one definitive source that says ‘I’ve got it all!’. Over time, I may install some of the more significant patches, but, as this is not the focus of this post, that’s going to have to wait for a more opportune time.
